Meeting 10-27-08

Half a dozen neighbors met at Doug and Denise’s to share news and plan for the future.

Squirrels: Carrie had sent a concern about squirrels, and many others have seen squirrels eating their fruits and newly-planted flowers and vegetables. We will ask Carrie to pursue her plan of calling Animal Care and Control to find out if anything can be done. Also, does feeding squirrels peanuts lure them into the neighborhood or keep them from eating our plants? How will we know if they are/become rabid? How do they relate to raccoons and other wild life?

Racoons: There is at least one large one around, but it’s ok: they eat slugs and snails.

Pit bulls: There are reportedly four on the street now. Are they licensed and neutered? Maybe Carrie can ask animal control about that, too.

Skate boards: The kids sometimes go down our hill and others nearby awfully fast. Could be dangerous to others as well as themselves. Hope they always wear helmets.

Strangers: Recently unfamiliar people have been seen walking up the block. Maybe just our own visitors?

Cars: Kevin and Mary sold their truck. People shouldn’t repair vehicles on the street. Parking cars so that they block people’s driveways is still an occasional problem.

Street cleaning: Has been changed to 2nd & 4th Monday & Thursdays of each month. The new schedule is a little confusing – note the signs, and put it on your calendars.

Neighbors: Helen is OK but almost never here any more. Her niece’s daughter is in the house. There is no new news about selling Joe’s house. There will be a Glen Park Festival again this next year, in April. Paul Park is slowly recovering from the brutal assault at his corner store in the Village. Rick Lopez is helping him to upgrade the store’s layout. Shawna’s daughter Rachel will volunteer as a poll worker at City Hall. Doug’s daughter Ruby will be attending the presidential inauguration in January.

New Year’s Eve: We will party at the top of the hill as usual. Everyone who lives on the street is invited, and Karen and Jeri, too. Doug will buy a new fire pot and pass the hat among us to pay for it. Any ideas on how to douse the street light up there for that night?

Next regular meeting: Meetings are quarterly and the next is scheduled for Monday, January 26. Who would like to host it?
